Volunteer with Children Cape Town

About Volunteer with Children Cape Town Project

Project Details

WTSA's social care and community programmes offer diverse and rewarding experiences for those looking to provide much needed help to less advantaged communities around South Africa.

The Greater Cape Town Projects are based in the Somerset West and Strand areas.

All of the Township Projects aim at the development of some, if not all of the following:

  • 1) Crèche support: Staff shortages, unhygienic facilities, a lack of play areas and the mixture of toddlers and babies can make it hard to follow a specific programme and find stimulating activities.  WTSA provides support, guidance, training and volunteers to the crèches, with volunteers providing crèche support for activities such as playtime, music, art, stories and games.
  • 2) Computer Literacy: Educating children about IT and teaching them basic computer skills.
  • 3) Feeding Schemes: Relieving hunger, malnutrition and chronic diseases by providing low cost nutritious food to disadvantaged communities.  This is done through a network of community kitchens and healthcare workshops.
  • 4) Empowerment of Women: Empowering women to fight against rural issues affecting them every day, including poverty, low literacy rates, dependency, unequal rights and limited access to education.

Accommodation

Volunteers are accommodated in WTSA’s fully-furnished volunteer house or apartments in Greater Cape Town, Somerset West and Strand areas with all modern conveniences.  The accommodation is located in upmarket, safe areas with complete security and within walking distance of the CBD, shops, pubs and restaurants.

What will you do?

Volunteers may be required to help where needed or where they have clear skills they can share with local communities. Activities may include:

  • 1) Crèche Support: Volunteers assist crèche teachers with a prescribed routine consisting of playtime, music, art, stories and games. They might also have the opportunity to look after the babies at specific crèches when needed.  From time to time volunteers will have the opportunity to assist in setting up a new crèche. This could include activities such as helping to train teachers, as well as preparing classrooms by cleaning the facilities, creating learning material and so on.

  • 2) Computer Literacy and Teaching: Volunteers teach computer literacy and various computer programme skills to children during the afternoons.  The help of volunteers is also regularly needed to meet the physical and human resource needs of various schools in the township. Volunteers are involved in teaching English, various life skills and different sporting activities to the children.

  • 3) Office Administration: Some assistance with administrative tasks might be required to aid the smooth running of the organisation.

Past Volunteer Comments

Magdalena Kasper (Germany)

"It was very interesting to see the differences between rich and poor people. I could teach the the children new things. The people in Kayamandi and at the project are very nice."

Katrin Helbig (Switzerland)

"The people at the Township Community project and the rangers at ADDO Park are great characters and very knowledgeable about the country. It was such a pleasure to work with them! The children in the Creches are amazing. I will never forget them!"

Stephanie Lotz (Germany)

"The children are so beautiful, it was so great to give them love back."

Rebekka Mangold (Germany)

"I enjoyed playing with the kids, getting a relationship with the children and seeing their smiles. It is very good that there is a contact person (volunteer coordinator - Ed); the communication was very good and we always got information at any time. I got an insight into another culture and some of my highlights were doing a trip to Cape Point, making new friends and to "live" in another country."

Jara Lieske (Germany)

"I really enjoyed all my work with the children! It was an inimitable experience and I love to teach and play with the kids. They were so thankful for every touch and all the attention. I will never forget this time and I thank the school for all its cordiality! I think I had a lot of highlights. I found new friends, I saw the beautiful country and made a lot of trips: the Cape Point tour, the Garden Route; and basically the life in such a big group was a highlight. A stay abroad I can only recommend!"
