Journal Entry: Adrian Westhaus - Germany - 2012-08-27
What was your personal highlight of the day/week?
The highlight of this week was that I saw two Whitetip reef sharks under a ledge at Four bouy (one of the dive sites on Two Mile Reef).
But every day has its own highlights in Sodwana. Especially while diving because here there is, according to my experience, almost a guarantee of seeing a Manta Ray, Turtle or Whale every day.
What interesting fact did you learn today/this week?
In the marine reef ecology lectures I have learned a lot of new interesting facts.
The sea temperature is rising about 0.3 °C each year in Sodwana, for example. That is really bad, but interesting.
I also learned a lot about underwater photography this week.
What was your favourite species that you saw today/this week?
Whitetip reef shark.
We also saw a Whale Shark on August 24, on the way back from Ribbon (a dive site on 5 Mile Reef), which was amazing!!!!
And it is always great to see a turtle.
Are you enjoying your camp accommodation?
Yes, our accomodation is really comfortable and I do not miss anything.
How does South Africa differ from your home country?
It's winter and it is nearly 30° C sometimes! In Germany, winter is about 40 degrees less.
South Africa is also a country of differences: some are nice, like the wilderness and the cities. Others are very sad, like the way most of the locals are living in their small huts between the big lodges.
