Project Details

The Children's Hospital is situated in the world famous city of Cape Town. The Children's Hospital was built in 1956 and is the largest, stand-alone tertiary hospital dedicated entirely to child healthcare in Southern Africa. The hospital manages around 260 000 patient visits each year, the majority of which are from exceptionally poor and marginalised communities. One third of the little patients are younger than a year. This extraordinary place of healing advocates that no child will be turned away. The Children's Hospital Care programme seeks to improve the hospital experience of sick children and their families by reducing the anxiety of patients through Play volunteering and the Family Support Programme.


Volunteers are accommodated in a Backpackers Lodge close to the hospital. Free Wi-Fi in lounge. Facilities include swimming pool, bar, pool table, laundry facilities, braai area, tour desk. The accommodation is located in good and safe area and is within walking distance to the CBD, shops, pubs and restaurants.

What will you do?

Volunteers do not need formal qualifications and are not required to have any medical or associated skills. They must, however, have a sincere interest in children, medicine and a compassionate nature.

The core function of the programme is to put a smile of a sick child's face.

Duties are but not limited to:

Volunteers assist in the wards by reading to the children, playing and by engaging in a compassionate way so that the child feels less anxious about their hospital stay.

Volunteers ensure that they clean all toys that is used by the children at the end of the day.

Volunteers can also assist with administrative duties

Volunteers also assist with events, such as Mandela Day, Youth Day, Easter Parade etc.
